Unbelievably, today the Senate voted to advance the “Fast Track” bill.
This is a bill that grants President Barack Obama accelerated power to complete a massive trade agreement with 11 other Pacific Rim nations.
A supermajority of U.S. senators voted to end debate and advance toward a final vote on a six-year reauthorization of trade promotion authority (TPA). (Booooo!)
Obama is seeking this renewed trade promotion authority to allow for finalized negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
The TPP Explained with Cartoons
If you are like me and didn’t know a lot about the TPP, check out this video explanation of the TPP….or this actual comic that goes into a lot more detail explaining the effects of Free Trade agreements such as the TPP.
Senator Bernie Sanders issued a statement in response today saying,
“The Senate just put the interests of powerful multi-national corporations, drug companies and Wall Street ahead of the needs of American workers.
If this disastrous trade agreement is approved, it will throw Americans out of work while companies continue moving operations and good-paying jobs to low-wage countries overseas.”
“Bad trade deals like the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership are a major reason for the collapse of the American middle class and the increase in wealth and income inequality in the United States,” Sanders continued.
This agreement, like bad trade deals before it, would force American workers to compete with desperate workers around the world – including workers in Vietnam where the minimum wage is 56-cents an hour.
Trade agreements should not just work for corporate America, Wall Street and the pharmaceutical industry. They have got to benefit the working families of our country,” Sanders said. “We must defeat fast track and develop a new policy on trade.”
Bernie Sanders’ comment was originally published on Bernie Sanders’ Senate website.
Bernie Sanders Exposes the Truth about the TPP
On May 14, 2015, Bernie Sanders addressed the Senate urging them to vote against advancing this disastrous job-killing legislation (video below).
He details all the groups that are opposed to the TPP such as every Trade Union group in the US, relief organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, religious groups such as the United Methodist Church and virtually every environmental group in the USA.
